Welcome to part two of Second Hand, an exhibition we are presenting as part of ABC, a project in collaboration with Back Lane West and CMR - two other Redruth-based contemporary art projects. This part of the project features a group exhibition by 15 contemporary artists unfolding over three weekends across two spaces, curated by Liam Jolly.

Part One took place on St Piran’s Day in the K9 Crusaders Charity Shop on Redruth’s Fore Street as a one day intervention, with works nestled amongst the shop’s many treasures before being extracted and re-presented here at Auction House for the following two weeks.

The charity shop iteration was a great success. This experiment in real time, on Redruth’s high street and on one of the busiest days of the year, could have gone wrong in many ways; instead, the event became a celebration of community, intrigue, and conversation, demonstrating more than ever the power art has to bring people, voices, and ideas together.

Now you join us for part two, here at Auction House. Moving between these contrasting systems of value and display, Second Hand is interested in how context shapes meaning - from the visual noise of a charity shop to the conventions of the gallery.

By asking artists to present something existing, work with items in the shop, or make a light-touch intervention within this non-art space, the project invites new audiences to encounter contemporary art and then follow it as it relocates to Auction House, making the act of extraction both visible and literal.
